Benny the bartender and owner of Benny's Billards was an improvised characterisation by Tom Waits. He is better known for his music than his acting, having written over twenty albums in thirty years. His songs tend to characterise the seedy underbelly of life and tell tales from the fringes of society. Heavily writing with imagery, it is no surprise that he became fascinated with cinema. Working with Coppola for soundtracks on earlier films led to him winning an Oscar for his "One From The Heart" soundtrack.
