S.E Hinton reached international acclaim as the voice of youth when her first novel The Outsiders was published in 1967 and soon hit the best sellers lists.
Now a permanent fixture on school curriculums, people are still reading her work today.
S.E Hinton wrote Rumble Fish, still on familiar themes of the relationships between brothers, gangs and society, but this one had more of an edge and more classical overtones, featuring references to Greek myths and using symbolism such as colours or animals. You can read quotes from the book here.
Written as a short story in 1968 and published as a novel in 1975, it was a hit with the critics and found its own audience, leading Ms Hinton to remark, "when I get a letter from a kid who says Rumble Fish is his favorite book, he's usually in a reformatory."
